busy

Tons of schoolwork to finish, twelve hour day at school for me today. And so much more to do in a week or so. But I’ve found my calm somehow.

Sleeping accidentally late yesterday, a late evening coffee out with a friend, a new sky blue gardigan, life is good.

Today I am in love with these photos and a beautiful blog, manteli.

Now some sleep.

mail!
Look at the cute envelope covering the gocco print!

Rainy day made better by beautiful mail. I’ve also got a stack of dutch magazines to read (the perfect way to study the language).

The cold is gone, I have a craving for yoga classes and fresh air. I feel like I am coming out of winter hibernation, shedding skin, thinking new things. Most days I wake up before the alarm clock, maybe it is possible to store sleep after all…

A couple of days school too, this week. Yesterday we visited:

Kokoro&Moi (ex-Syrup Helsinki)

yellow

I have a new project: composing sketchbook-pages from the leftover paper scrap + paint on my desk at the end of an illustration day. Time it takes: five to ten minutes. (The annoying thing is I usually like them better than the real pieces. I have no idea how to fool myself into bringing the same fun into work. )

Monday cool:
Camilla’s converse (I want this version)
Design police will punish!
A good article on making the jump to your own business
Roisin Murphy concert this Wednesday night.

What are you up to this week?

Pifi

Look, it’s Pifi! She hangs out on my windowsill, because she likes the rain, snow and especially storms (like the one yesterday). Or maybe she’s just waiting to see the sun again (like me).

Thank you Karin! I need to make a start on my own pif-gifts some time.

green balls
pretty gift

Christmas came and went, with dinners, relatives, board games and candy. My no-stuff wish worked pretty well and I mostly got gifted with non-stuff. Now it’s wonderful to be home alone again, enjoying the quiet, lazing about in my pajamas.

I’ve been looking for ideas because I think my website is due a facelift; I need to start looking for a summer job.. (wink wink, potential employers!)

recent inspiration:
- nice work from practice
- muuto, love the big navigation.
- Jonathan Looman’s fingertype.
- modular typography by Kokuyo (via Sia)
- Essimar’s blog and paper creations.

mail and more mail
Blue, naturally. And black, no sugar. How about you?

Today I <3:
A parcel from Amazon, Marieke’s cool businesscards (we swapped), this sticky tape (want!), this movie I really want to see (the main character becomes a vegan), candles I am lighting because it’s so cold and dark.

mistake
Today I got overcaffeinated and wrecked a new moleskine.

I’ve been wallowing in one of those crises I so dismiss. I don’t like anything I draw or make. I want to scrap everything old and start again. My pens and paints are gathering dust. I don’t want to work… can’t. But I need it, badly. I may not always like drawing or making “art” but I can’t get around it. It’s like flossing or stretching. You feel good afterwards. (this still holds.)

If nothing else, I am going to wreck some pages.

Psst. I’ve got ffffound. Yay for inspiration!

listening: Dntel - rock my boat
reading: not bying it - my year without shopping

Today has been: boring lectures, vegan chocolate-truffle cake as a dessert to a good lunch, a library visit (to pick up the reading), cleaning house, an afternoon cup of coffee while reading some yoga stuff. Soon a friend’s birthday party. All is good in the world <3

today’s findings:

It occurred to me today that there are only two kinds of useful people in the world: those making art and those making change. Everyone else is pretty much crap in my book, and actually, I really only get along with people who walk both paths.
-resistance is fertile

i have always felt a little confused when people do not express that they like something; i don’t know if they are just embarrassed to let the person know, or feel like the person will not like them as much or will disregard their opinion, or if they in part want to convey a persona of ‘not being impressed’ or something

(I want to read Tao Lin’s books!)
Have a good weekend!

Rainy day. Thankfully I’ve got rainboots (two pairs, actually), so I am almost ready to escape to the rainy land… Okay, some more dutch to learn first. (sigh.)

oh and there’s a web version of thinking with type.

Autumn - home

bags
favourite bags: one bought, one mom’s old, one flea-market

Today there was a storm. Water rushing down the drains, thunder, lightning… it feels good to just be home, catching up on work. I declare today autumn 1st, let’s celebrate it with a big cup of tea and a cinnamon bun.

Since spending time away from Helsinki (the week before) and having my Dutch friends here, it’s been difficult to get back to the groove of everyday things. Although I guess, I’ve been somewhat out of the groove all summer. All I’ve done seems to be sleeping and sleeping and watching movies. Despite all my great plans, I have barely drawn a line all summer. But summer is never a creative time for me. During summers I go into a rest mode.

And after all this resting, I feel full of energy. I love how everything is new. Fall fashions (I got new heels and a jacket), new dance classes, new courses at school… new home to nest in. Reading stacks of books and making apple crumble, good things all around. I will try to preserve some of my recent calm when it gets busy again.

Here’s some recent finds:
