happy patterns

I think I have enough bedsheets to last me a lifetime. That is if all my sheets are as durable as these 70’s ones, handed down by my mother. (Somehow I doubt that.) It bugs me that I may have to buy some sheets if I spend next year in Holland. There is only so much things you can pack in one suitcase, you know.

I like old things. They are like family members, they have always been there. They hold memories. They outlast new things.

Sometimes I think the way out of this overconsumption is not less materialism but more. How about being so particular in our consumption that we only want things that will last us thirty years. I want to move into that direction. I am still toying with the idea of some kind of buying strike too.

Guess I’ll never work in advertising, huh? Although I’d kind of like to start my own “eco ad-agency” and use all the things learned at my marketing classes for good. I’d do marketing for organic cosmetics, soy milk, wind power… it’s a growing market after all.

P.S. My best deed in a while: ordering a diva cup. We’ll see how that goes.. (I mean, I will. No one else will see a thing!)

PIF - I love mail

"Congrats!"
a birthday card I made for a friend recently

I wonder if the real reason I like bookmooching is waiting for the parcels… Of course it is ecological (and economical) as I am not buying so many new books (I am trying to mooch or use library for everything these days), my books find new homes, and preowned things, they feel so much more precious somehow. My newest mooch was a London guide!

So naturally I wanted to join Pay It Forward.

The rules are:

I will send a handmade gift to the first 3 people who leave a comment
on my blog requesting to join this PIF exchange. I don’t know what
that gift will be yet and you may not receive it tomorrow or next week,
but you will receive it within 365 days, that is my promise! The only
thing you have to do in return is pay it forward by making the same
promise on your blog.

So leave a comment, and you’ll get a surprise parcel from me, sooner or later! (I’ll get one from Karin.)

kamkam
KamKam from Paris, postcard from Brussels (mystery postcard #3)

listening: kent -747 (actually the swedish version of 747, which is way better, and the lyrics much more beautiful. )

I wonder where all the time is disappearing. I guess it rushes past while I’m busy at school. Not much computer time lately since I am also doing a three week yoga course. It’s the best thing in a while… yoga suits me.

And school - I really like the courses we have this fall; logo and identity design, typography. Don’t know if I am going to be a typographer, but at least I want to work in something heavily related to it: magazines, books etc.

Guess what! In November my class is traveling to Vilna, Lithuania. We are having a whole week of typography workshop at the local Art Academy. I am looking forward to it.

today’s notes:
Typographicas favourite fonts of 2006
Experimental JetSet (Amsterdam, sigh…)

How is Helsinki, you ask. Colder and crisper than Brussels, probably. But sunny, at least today. Good for long walks, but don’t forget to wear mittens!

puolukka
rusty

listening: Dntel - rock my boat
reading: not bying it - my year without shopping

Today has been: boring lectures, vegan chocolate-truffle cake as a dessert to a good lunch, a library visit (to pick up the reading), cleaning house, an afternoon cup of coffee while reading some yoga stuff. Soon a friend’s birthday party. All is good in the world <3

today’s findings:

It occurred to me today that there are only two kinds of useful people in the world: those making art and those making change. Everyone else is pretty much crap in my book, and actually, I really only get along with people who walk both paths.
-resistance is fertile

i have always felt a little confused when people do not express that they like something; i don’t know if they are just embarrassed to let the person know, or feel like the person will not like them as much or will disregard their opinion, or if they in part want to convey a persona of ‘not being impressed’ or something
- Tao Lin, reader of depressing books.

(I want to read Tao Lin’s books!)
Have a good weekend!

Rainy day. Thankfully I’ve got rainboots (two pairs, actually), so I am almost ready to escape to the rainy land… Okay, some more dutch to learn first. (sigh.)

Recent finds:
clever business card concepts
book by it’s cover
free font manifesto
oh and there’s a web version of thinking with type.

stuck

Monday, October 1st, 2007

Been stuck on Ane Brun for some weeks now, especially ‘Temporary Dive’ (the video freaks me out a bit though).

I feel stuck, like waiting for the next thing… whatever that is. A project, a friend, something, to grab me… my whole attention. But I am trying to let myself just be. Not worry too much but simply be there for someone who needs me these days…

Good things:
Starting yoga classes again. (even going to an ashtanga yoga course!)
Camilla’s calender for 2008 (want!)
Animals on the underground (London, London, but when?)

P.P.S. No postcard in September.
